I trained as a fine artist (painter) and then spent several years teaching and exhibiting . I began taking photos again about 5 years ago. Photography was something I did a lot of but kind of let go of as painting took over.
The great thing about painting was that it grounded me in formal aesthetics which I hope shows through.
I take photos of whatever is around me but I hope I imbue it with something special… this really is how I see the world.

Hi Richard
Just checked out your site after seeing you on FriendsReunited. Fabulous photos – I’m v. impressed. Particularly like the southend pier one. Beautifully composed and shot – you certainly have an eye for it. Are you still painting? I was never really into photography myself – put off by all that lurking around under a red light and tinkering with chemicals at Barnsley art college. Something that always seemed to happen during that late night stint we had to do – brings back the smell of chicken and mushroom pot-noodle for me… but I digress. Anyway, recently took it up again through necessity – I’m in the death throws of a HND in graphic design with unfortunately (or so I originally thought) had a photographic module instead of an illustration one. Anyhow – found myself really enjoying the digital side of things – gives an instant fix etc. Are you digital or still hitting the dark room?
Anyway, printing out some photos for a college project deadline today so better crack on (not a patch on any of yours though – I’m ok compositionally, but a technical disaster (but hey, I like blurs – I’m shortsighted and that’s how I see the world… )
